Service Updates

Paiheretia Te Muka Tangata

From left to right - Paiheretia Manager - Caleb Sadler, Kaiarataki - Makeisha Timperley-Kake, Parnia Komene, Service Delivery Pou- Phillippa Kingi, Kaiarataki Administrator - Shayla Hohepa, Kaiarahi- Bevan Rodger

Paiheretia Te Muka Tāngata (Uniting the threads of whānau) draws on the strengths of the Whānau Ora approach to support Māori and their whānau who are engaged in the Corrections system to develop their pathways to achieve their aspirations.

The team participated in a hui where all stakeholders, iwi providers, and partner agencies gathered to celebrate our achievements! We shared updates on the delivery of services across various regions of Te Tai Tokerau, strategised for the future of Paiheretia, and brainstormed improvements for more efficient and effective service delivery. It was a great time for whanaungatanga and to enjoy kai together!

Keep an eye out for our interview with Paiheretia Programme Manager, Caleb where he shares insight into how this important role weaves whānau back into the community. Ka rawe!

Mate Wareware

A first-of-its-kind partnership to improve outcomes for whānau living with dementia has been launched in the Far North!

Our team, Te Hau Ora o Ngāpuhi (THOON) and the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research (CBR) have joined forces to create Te Rōpū Aumangea, a kaupapa Māori programme to support kaiawhina (caregivers) and whānau caring for people with Mate Wareware, Dementia.

The initiative follows a world-first study on dementia launched late last year by CBR deputy-director Māori, Dr Makarena Dudley (Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāi Takoto).

The nationwide study will determine the prevalence of dementia among Māori, with the new THOON and CBR partnership to complement the research being carried out in that space.

Our CEO, Tia Ashby said the partnership between CBR and THOON was not merely a collaboration but represented a beacon of hope in efforts to address the many challenges faced by Māori. Check out the epic write-up below:

General Updates

Stroke Awareness - F.A.S.T

The team at Stroke Foundation NZ have shared some fantastic resources to help spread awareness around stroke to our Ngāpuhi whānau.

It's super important to know the signs of a stroke. These might include feeling numb or weak suddenly in your face, arm, or leg - particularly on one side of the body. You might also experience confusion, have difficulty speaking or understanding others, or have trouble seeing. Walking might become challenging, you could feel dizzy, lose your balance, or have a sudden, severe headache without any apparent reason.

Remember the acronym F.A.S.T. - Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call for help. If you or someone you're with starts to show these symptoms, getting help quickly can really make a difference in minimising damage and boosting recovery. To learn more, visit their website, stroke.org.nz.
