Kaiarataki Navigator

Purpose:

Through Paiheretia te Muka Tāngata, the Kaiarataki Navigator will work directly with whānau at all stages in their journey through the Correction's system - assisting them to set goals and navigating them to, and helping them access, the services and support they need to realise their goals and aspirations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Kaiarataki Navigator will work with whānau of tāne Māori under 30 years of age on a prison or community-based sentence or order int Te Tai Tokerau.

  • Ensure that Tāne are accessing meaningful rehabilitation support and reintegrating successfully back to their whānau and communities.
  • Ensure that Whānau understand the welfare system and their entitlements including income, accommodation and employment support.
  • Assist Whānau in developing pathways to independence, including government assistance and interventions in their lives.
  • Provide tools and advice to Whānau so that they can gain employment in positions that provide them with the income to achieve the standard of living they aspire to.
  • Ensure Whānau have all the necessary paperwork and resources for successful reintegration including birth certificates, bank accounts and photo ID.
  • Assist Whānau in accessing programmes that support and increase their Whānau knowledge, skills and resources.
  • Performance Measures: Ensure you work closely with your team to ensure performance measures are achieved at all times.
  • Monitoring Activity: Support your supervisor around monitoring activity, and relationship managers and meeting with them from time to time.
  • Monitoring Reporting: Provide the Kaiarataki Administrator with the data, information and narratives for reporting in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Workforce Development:
    • Actively contribute to a ‘learning organisation’ culture.
    • Encourage and support kaimahi in their respective roles to gain the relevant qualification
    • Encourage/support kaimahi to gain their relevant practising certificates eg. Social Work Registration & Practicing Certificate, First Aid Certificate etc
    • Complete core training and individual learning plan

    • Record Whānau Plans in the first language of the Client/Whānau.
    • Demonstrate cultural competencies.
    • Lead/facilitate cultural competencies around the core competencies and Tikanga for THOON
  • Whanāu Centered Practice:
    • Facilitate/train kaimahi Demonstrate and practice an understanding of Whānau-centered principles.
    • Facilitate/train kaimahi on how to Complete plans and associated documents on time and to the required standard.
    • Collect and analyse evaluations, surveys and/or client feedback.
    • Complete reviews at appropriate intervals.
    • Support the implementation of Te Hau Ora O Ngāpuhi quality systems in order to support kaimahi, so they may facilitate change with Whānau.
  • Deciding and Initiating Action:
    • Make prompt and clear decisions, which may involve tough choices or considered risks.
    • Take responsibility for actions, projects and people.

  • Writing and Reporting:
    • Write reports in an engaging manner, ensuring reports are clear, succinct and accurate.
    • Avoid unnecessary use of jargon and complicated language, writing in a well-structured and logical way.
    • Structure information to meet the needs and understanding of the intended audience.
  • Skills, experience and attributes
    • Familiarity and knowledge of the Whānau Ora framework.
    • A full NZ Drivers' Licence.
    • Have experience working with Tane in prison.
    • Non-judgemental, caring and firm
    • Allows whānau to determine how they might be supported;
    • Works with others and with whānau to achieve the best wellbeing outcomes
    • Experience with Microsoft 365
    • Have a high level of proficiency in Te Reo me ona tikanga and/or understanding of Māori customs/principles.
    • Flexibility to work under tight timeframes
    • Able to pass a criminal convictions check/clean slate police vetting.
    • Competent in literacy and numeracy.

Skills, Experience, and Education:

  • Clean full New Zealand Drivers Licence
  • Community awareness and an ability to engage whānau
  • Understand confidentiality expectations with regards to entering homes, engaging with whānau, collecting and recording data
  • Ability to build rapport and trust with young people and whānau.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with professionals to support access to services for young people.
  • Cultural competency and demonstrable knowledge and skill about kaupapa Māori, Te Reo Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Pacifica protocols.
  • Behaviour management/ conflict resolution skills.
  • Meet all standard employment prerequisites
